[He nods. To hell with formalities as well, then. He'd hate to admit it'd have felt better to fall back on obligations of politeness. That this was going so... smoothly, he supposes, is exhausting.
It was a good man he was facing, he guesses. But there had to be more, and he wasn't seeing it. He wasn't seeing it, and it was gnawing at him and making his stomach churn in violent, repressed frustration.
Being so blind was so new to him; it didn't make his new life seem worth the breaths he took.] Likewise. I'm fine.
[He'd died, and he won't ever see his home again. That was fine. He'd died here before-- a week ago, tops. Death was cheap, but that time it'd had a reason and-] And your summons? [And Neji didn't come here to talk about himself, or dawdle.]
I'm afraid that's a vast oversimplification. I don't "make" my Pokémon battle; they have complete agency over their own actions. If they were unwilling to follow a command, they would simply disobey me. Competition is something that they quite enjoy.
[ along with the fact that steven's pokémon respect him, they're fierce battlers in their own right. ]
Battles are just one of many ways to show the bonds that humans and Pokémon have. It's a way to create a wordless dialogue to not only understand your opponent, but also your own companions.
Just hearing your reassurance is already a tremendous help. Thank you, Frisk.
[ he really does mean that. just knowing that they're safe is a worry off of his shoulders to begin with, but it's nice to hear that people are concerned for him. it helps with the feeling of isolation that comes with death. ]
I mean, not because they're low or anything, but— you know.
[ he'd be a little more flustered or explain that with more energy, but everyone's a little exhausted right now. he just hopes he gets his point across... that steven doesn't actively need to try to meet those expectations, because he always does. it's just the nature of his being or something. ]
[ that makes him laugh. it's a little more than what adrien might have heard before - it's not complete, but more than just a small chuckle. strength aside, it's nice to hear those words.
it'll be another road to full recovery, but he can already feel things returning to relative normalcy. ]
Yes, I know what you meant. [ he pauses, letting the moment hang for just a second. ] Though now that I'm thinking about it, I think we both deserve a small treat. Would you like to accompany me for lunch once things have settled?
[ ooh. well, more signs of helping steven's mood certainly helps adrien's own, and that invitation to lunch is an additional plus. even if in the midst of a whole lot of emotions piling on him, and the situation not really being addressed... steven somehow finds a way to cheer him up.
and adrien really isn't sure how to express his gratitude for that.
his voice perks up, and: ]
You don't even need to ask.
[ haha. but he honestly really doesn't, adrien's always going to say yes. ]
Know you'd do the same for me, so... Don't have to thank me. Just gotta promise to take care of yourself, and... Not do anything dumb, like a dumb doodoohead.
[This is their attempt at making the mood a little brighter. Experience shock and awe at their excellent vocabulary.]
I promise I will try my best to do nothing of the sort.
[ that's a sincere promise, but we all know that steven is a gigantic dumb doodoohead at heart. at the very least, he sounds a little better than he did when he had first picked up the call. ]
[ while he certainly isn't feeling up to going out at the present moment, a confirmation like that means that he'll be contacting adrien again the day he feels back to normal. it'll help him settle back into routine, and maybe he'll be able to get the full scope of what happened to the younger man when he was taken.
it's not something he'll relentlessly pry into, but he just wants to make sure that adrien is okay, too. ]
[ thank you for not calling him an animal abuser, sans. he appreciates that. ]
I wouldn't hesitate to call my Pokémon close friends. I've been with several of them since I was a child - we have a certain bond that can't easily be broken.
[Sounding as bossy as a 10-year-old kid can sound. Where are they going with this...? It's a mystery. But they're glad Steven sounds a little better than he did earlier.]
[ he has a feeling that he can guess what frisk's intentions are. after all, it was a gesture that they had shared when they had first met; how could he forget?
but even though they can't see him, he does it anyway. it's enough to bring a brighter smile to his lips. ]
Okay. I'll be right here. For that, and if you need any help with anything. Or, er, just for anything in general.
[ he pauses.
obviously there's another thing he wants to add onto that. ]
... Thanks, Steven.
[ just for everything, though he doesn't outright say that. maybe it's a little sappy and while he does feel a little shy about being so straightforward, it's true. all these things remind him to be grateful for the support and people he's met here, as it does make things easier.
not!dad especially.
so, for sure, he needs to do the same, any way he can. ]
[ he definitely sounds better, but hearing the smile in frisk's voice helps with that even more. he's still physically cold, but there's a certain warmth in his chest that's built up. ]
I'll be sure to give you a proper one when we meet next.
[If Steven has been paying attention to Frisk's schedule over the past few days, he might have noticed it's gone completely off-rocker. That is to say: they've been staying in during daylight hours, heading out near nighttime, and generally changing up their usual habits. It's entirely possible he hasn't seen them in person since the 19th despite living in the same apartment building, and that is very intentional on Frisk's part.
... Which is why they're super duper startled when they pretty much poke their head out of their apartment, look both ways, and end up making eye contact with Steven as he heads up or down the hallway. Who knows what he's doing? It's a mystery. Adults are hecking weird, anyway.
But what isn't a mystery is the fact that Frisk is visibly freezing up at their doorway for two whole seconds, almost like they're considering heading back in. That doesn't happen, though, and a second later they're slowly letting go of the doorknob and closing the door behind them. They pause, pull down the oversized hoodie they're wearing over their usual sweater, and offer Steven a quick smile.]
[ steven is usually one for formalities, but right now just doesn't seem appropriate to use them. they aren't friends, but they certainly aren't strangers - what kind of relationship do you have with someone that you watched die? ]
I'm glad to hear that. [ he really is, but his second questions makes him raise an eyebrow. ] If you're referring to my Pokémon, they're all fine. Carbink has some recovering to do, but it should be back to full health soon.
[ oh, you bet he has. steven isn't normally an invasive person - he prefers to watch from afar, only stepping in to intervene when it's absolutely necessary. he's a firm believer in waiting to see how things take their course, but he doesn't like how things have been looking for frisk lately. skarmory has let him know that he's seen frisk out on the streets of the city late at night, and he's barely heard a peep from them in almost a week.
he's on his way to the research tower to do some extra work on a specimen he's recently mined from a cave outside of the colony walls, but it seems like he's unexpectedly run into frisk... at least, he thinks its frisk. the assumption obviously comes from the fact that its their apartment suite that they're coming out of, but that hoodie makes it difficult to see their face.
he doesn't like it. his intuition says that something is up, and he's rarely wrong when such a feeling arises. #suspicious ]
Frisk. [ a pause. ] Where are you off to?
[ his voice is calm, but his eyes are far more questioning. ]
[His intuition is spot on, obviously. But Frisk will be making an attempt to pretend things are alright, despite the fact that they are decidedly not. They've been acting weird since the day Steven saw them at the park, which is... odd, to say the least. Besides the invisible animals and the memory sharing, nothing terrible has happened, right?
Right.]
I'm, um... Going out. To eat. [WHY DOES IT SOUND LIKE THEY'RE UNSURE.] ... Heard eating late is better for you.
[Just keep walking, Steven. Keep on walking. There's nothing to see here.]
