It does to me. [ there's a pause. this seems to be a reoccurring theme with the people he's gotten close to... ] I'd like you to be honest with me, please. In return, I will do the same.

[ he'll even admit that he's a little bit not okay, if that's what it takes. ]

The fact that you're owning up to your mistake is in itself a way of taking responsibility. You did what you could; not one of us holds that against you.

[Steven's points are all valid, but that doesn't stop them from feeling like a terrible person. They've tried so hard to be better, to avoid killing anyone and anything, and still... It ended up with someone else having to kill for them. It's really their fault.

There's a pause before they reply.]

[They don't want to hurt people anymore, but... People ended up getting hurt, anyway. They don't know how to deal with that.

And they add, because they blame themselves that much:] ... You saw what I did to Mom.

[ that makes him pause. what they did to mom... he's about to ask what they mean, but that's when he remembers the mirrored room. he saw frisk kill someone - that someone definitely wasn't human, though. they may not have been their real mother, but someone they thought of as such...

no wonder they were so adverse to watching that scene play out in front of them. it makes him wonder, but he does his best to reserve judgement. that isn't fair to frisk, and besides; ]

You sound remorseful. Am I right about that?

["Remorseful" doesn't... quite begin to cover it. That word would be more appropriate if they hadn't killed Toriel again and again and again after that first time. Do they even have the right to regret everything?]

Feeling bad about stuff doesn't mean I didn't do it. [Which is a funny thing to say, since they're only applying this to themselves. The past is in the past as far as other people are concerned, after all.] Still have killed before. Shouldn't have made you do it for me.

You've done something very wrong in the past. I won't reassure you of otherwise.

[ he's already on his way out his door, phone to his ear. it won't take him long to get to their apartment, but he doesn't want them to be alone. as he walks, he continues. ]

But the fact that you feel remorse is more important than you might understand. When I see that you regret those past actions and that you were willing to shoulder such a burden, that tells me quite a bit about your character. At your truest core, I don't think you're a bad person.

You told me once that you were good at dealing with trouble. I don't doubt that, but that does not mean you should shoulder it all yourself. At least allow me that much.

[Oh. Wow. Steven. What the heck did they do to deserve a friend like Steven? It couldn't have been in this timeline. Or the last. Or any other timeline they've gone through, really. This is far more kindness than they deserve.

If they get the urge to cry at any given moment, well. Steven doesn't have to know. They'll duck their head the moment they feel their eyes stinging, and keep their gaze steady on the floor.]

[ with how often he's getting hugs nowadays, he actually sees this one coming. because of that, he can return it properly and without a moment of awkward hesitation. it's certainly warranted, and he's sure that frisk needs it. ]

[ but that's not to say that he'll hold it against them if that promise can't be kept - it's a big responsibility. but they thankfully don't have to worry about that at the moment, so once frisk decides to let go, they'll get a short little hair ruffle. ur a good egg, kiddo. ]
