[Should Steven check his CereVice after respawning, he'll find a fair number of texts and missed calls from Frisk. They range from casually concerned ("are you not occupied now"), to legitimately worried ("havent seen you in 2 days are you ok???????????").
Thankfully, this most recent call goes through.]
Steven. [They sound so relieved.] Are you okay? Did something bad happen again? I couldn't find you.
[Couldn't find him and a couple of their other friends, actually. Their child panic was reaching new heights. It really doesn't take a lot to make them think worst case scenarios.]
[ he does check his cerevice, and hot damn does he have a lot of messages and missed calls. while they range quite a bit from different people, frisk's are the most recent. his body is still frigid and numb from the hypothermia, but that won't stop him from answering their call. he owes them that much for making them concerned. ]
I'm fine, Frisk. You don't need to worry.
[ he hasn't answered all of their questions, but it's a start. ]
[Telling them not to worry is fine and all, but it doesn't do much to actually alleviate their concerns. Not really. If anything, it makes them worry even more. If something small and insignificant had happened, then it wouldn't have been brushed off like this. People don't really tend to reassure them point-blank unless something awful went down. That's their experience.]
What happened?
[Their tone is a little more firm here. They don't want to be reassured. They want to know if he's really okay.]
[ you're a smart cookie, frisk. steven knows that as well, but he wants to avoid talking to them about what happened, if only for the reason that they shouldn't have to deal with it. he had made mistakes and perished as a result; the suffering that stemmed from that didn't have to be passed on to the people he held concern for. ]
Several of us were sent away from the colony for a while. We were only just recently brought back.
[ it's not a lie, but a half-truth. hopefully he won't have to go into the details of the rest of it. ]
Mm, heard about that. Saw people talking about it on the network, and... Sans and Undyne and Viridi were gone for a while, too. Dunno if it was because of the same stuff, but...
[Undyne probably gave them a very shounen retelling of what happened. It all sounded very epic and amazing (and most likely embellished), but she was only gone for a couple of hours. Which brings them to—]
... You were gone for days, though. Something different happened.
[A pause.]
S'okay if you don't wanna talk about it — I don't mind. Just... don't want you to act like everything's okay when you're not feeling okay? We're friends.
[They're not going to push. If Steven doesn't want to go into detail, then he doesn't want to go into detail. Having him admit he's "not at his best" is close enough, anyway. It puts them a little at ease.]
But... lemme know if you need anything, okay? I'll help.
Just hearing your reassurance is already a tremendous help. Thank you, Frisk.
[ he really does mean that. just knowing that they're safe is a worry off of his shoulders to begin with, but it's nice to hear that people are concerned for him. it helps with the feeling of isolation that comes with death. ]
Know you'd do the same for me, so... Don't have to thank me. Just gotta promise to take care of yourself, and... Not do anything dumb, like a dumb doodoohead.
[This is their attempt at making the mood a little brighter. Experience shock and awe at their excellent vocabulary.]
I promise I will try my best to do nothing of the sort.
[ that's a sincere promise, but we all know that steven is a gigantic dumb doodoohead at heart. at the very least, he sounds a little better than he did when he had first picked up the call. ]
[Sounding as bossy as a 10-year-old kid can sound. Where are they going with this...? It's a mystery. But they're glad Steven sounds a little better than he did earlier.]
[ he has a feeling that he can guess what frisk's intentions are. after all, it was a gesture that they had shared when they had first met; how could he forget?
but even though they can't see him, he does it anyway. it's enough to bring a brighter smile to his lips. ]
[ he definitely sounds better, but hearing the smile in frisk's voice helps with that even more. he's still physically cold, but there's a certain warmth in his chest that's built up. ]
I'll be sure to give you a proper one when we meet next.

You're right about that. But while I wouldn't say I am at my best, I really am fine.
[ the cold is uncomfortable and a little difficult to deal with, but it's not the worst thing that could have happened. he can handle it on his own. ]

They're linked. Should I shake on it?

Yup! [Really happy he got it.] Pretend your left hand is me, okay?
