[ a fancy lavender envelope will be delivered to steven's doorstep today! it's sealed with a blue snowflake stamp, and when opened, it will reveal an invite.
the party will be on march 6 oocly! and the address on the invite is weiss' home. ]
[ even if sweets aren't what steven would default to, that doesn't mean that he can't appreciate them! so imagine his surprise when nora shows up at his door, and with a mysterious box at that. ]
Nora? [ he wasn't expecting a visitor! ] This is a surprise.
You might be wondering why I'm writing a letter to you. It's because of the task on the taskboard. The mailman said that their business is dying, and I just can't have that. Writing letters is such a good form of communication, and it's much more personal.
In any case, I would like to invite you to take upon a task with me. There's a hunting task that I'm interested in doing because of its reward. There are some stones in the outskirts of town that have come to life and have turned into monsters. I was thinking about doing it with Nora, as well.
Please let me know if you're interested. And thank you for reading this letter.
[As cool as the amulets can be, especially when it comes to share memories, some times Bianca wishes she could just have an X-transceiver. Like now. Will Steven pay too much attention to her sad mood that she can't hide from the link?
Her voice tries to sound normal at least, but anyone that knows her would be able to tell she's lacking some of her usual cheer.]
Steven? He-hey! Do you have a moment? I-I was hoping you could help me with something...
[ while he won't directly address the mood he can read from the link, he keeps it in mind when he answers her. there's clearly something wrong, and he wants to help if she's reaching out to him. ]
[Someone as perceptive as Nora could easily detect Steven's recent mood drop. So, just like before, Nora drops by Steven's place unannounced with a box of croissants.
She glances down at her feet, wondering what happened with him.]
[ even as someone who has plenty of experience with hiding what he really feels, an event like this is a little bit past steven's threshold. it's only been a day since ignis arrived back in verens, and the first in several that steven has actually slept at his own apartment. with how busy he's been keeping himself with helping lunafreya and noctis prepare, he's been spending his nights at their home instead.
even so, being back at home hasn't eased his worries any less. he looks visibly tired as he opens the door to see nora, but his surprise helps to mask it. ]
Nora. [ it isn't the first time she's come by unannounced with food, but still. surprising. ] What can I do for you?
[ repeated for emphasis. he's known weiss long enough to know that it's par for the course to be addressed like that, but he'll save his scolding for after his curiosity about her question is sated. ]
[ No matter what Steven is doing at Ruby's birthday party, he'll likely notice a presence staring at him from across the room. The first few times, it seems as if it's just a coincidence, but as it goes on, it gets more and more ridiculous.
For example, Jaune will stare from around the corner of a room, or when he's pretending to talk to somebody, he moves the person aside to get a better look at Steven.
If Steven is near the window, Jaune is hiding behind the curtains. If Steven moves away, Jaune follows and brings the curtains with him.
And if Steven goes to the bathroom? Jaune will respectfully wait outside because he's not a maniac.
However, this will go on until Steven eventually addresses him! ]
[ a maniac he may not be, but it doesn't take long for steven to realize that the feeling he has of being watched isn't misplaced. as it starts out subtle and gradually becomes more noticeable, he's tempted to approach nora and ask if this is particularly normal behaviour for her teammate... but decides against it for decorum's sake. he only knows jaune by face - this is as good of an opportunity to approach him as any.
and so he does, raising a somewhat concerned eyebrow as he addresses a curtain that clearly has a young man standing behind it. ]
[ When Steven wakes, he will find that his crystal is glowing! His emotion drops for the month of Octha have resonated with Empatheias' giant crystal, and a reaction has been formed.
By his feet, he will find a pair of knitted shorts. If he ever puts them on, he will feel so comfortable in them, however, his patience will run a little thin so long as he has them on.
(Thank you for submitting to the Emotion Tracker!) ]
Steven will receive a tie clip and cufflink set. The card that comes with it merely reads "I think these will look good on you. They match your eyes. Merry Christmas!" in neat cursive. There's a stamp of a blue snowflake at the bottom of the card, though. That might give him a clue as to who the gift is from. ]
[Edna may not know Steven very well, but she knows one thing about him.
Rocks.
So Edna found a collection of "supernatural rocks and crystals" for sale in a kitschy shop and has given it to Steven with a small notebook of Edna's commentary on these "supernatural" rocks and their purported health benefits.
[Neither of them may really celebrate Christmas, but Steven still gets a gift from Leia. She isn't sure what Pokemon like Beldum eat, or even play with, otherwise she would have included something for them. Instead, what Steven receives are tools to use on his next cave-diving rock expedition. Hammer and chisels, a small case for the rocks, stuff he likely wears down whenever he goes on the hunt for more fancy rocks.]
If you ask me, I don't think you can have enough backup tools, and these I thought you could get some use out of.
--Leia
P.S. If you have the time, I'd recommend talking with Obi-Wan Kenobi about something called Kyber Crystals. I think you'd find it fascinating.
'Christmas' present. In time for... other-calendar Christmas.
Regis has learned about Steven's love for actual rocks, so the young man gets a little transparent box holding one of the rocks from the island where they went to get spare crystals after the thefts. One of the crystals that trigger exchange of memories between people who are close by.
The present is very carefully packaged and labeled, with due warnings, but since Regis picked a few of those to study during that trip to the other floating island, he hopes this might be as fascinating to Steven as it is to him.
[Early mornings tend to be Ignis' default, but the day following Noct and Luna's wedding is one of the few exceptions to his general rule of being up with the sun. It's still early by most people's standards when he wakes, stretching out for a moment beneath the covers. Though he can't see, he can sense light well enough to know that the sun has already risen, and he recalls that he had left his shirt, jacket and tie strewn across one of the armchairs in his room rather than putting them away properly the night before.
Given the amount of champagne that had been consumed the night before, as well as the general atmosphere, he hadn't been too concerned about taking proper care of his clothes at the time. Truth be told, he wasn't quite so worried about it now, either, as much as he might have been on any other day.
He carefully shifts beneath the sheets and rolls onto one side to gently put an arm around Steven's waist, uncertain of just how unconscious he might be.]
[ the night had been a fantastic one, to say the least. the other weddings that ignis had invited him to as a guest were couples that he wasn't very familiar with, but this one was different. noctis and lunafreya were two people that he had gotten to know well over his time in empatheias, especially in the past few months. he considers their happiness incredibly important, and seeing them finally achieve it after so much hardship in eos made it all the more emotional to witness.
besides that, he and ignis had enjoyed themselves plenty after the ceremony as well. the buzz of champagne and the warm feelings of love and affection seem to be impossible for them to ignore when they come home from events like this. their comfort with each other is beginning to make its reappearance behind closed doors, and he's adoring every moment of it.
he stirs slightly when ignis reaches around his waist, letting out a satisfied hum as he peeks one eye open with a sleepy smile. ]
We should talk somewhere where we can probably sit down, then.
[ She's trying her best to act mature -- she has to be, after all. Her shoulders have been squared the whole time but she relaxes a little as she turns to look around. ]
[ though he knows Weiss to be poised and proper in the best of times, there's something about the way that she holds herself now that has him concerned. this isn't like the times where she had called upon him for advice and a confession in confidence - the emotions in the air around them feel much more... bleak. ]
I'll follow your lead.
[ he doesn't press further than that. whatever she wants to say should be said on her own terms, when she's ready. ]
[May's battle with Lance had been interesting in quite a few ways, in both watching a high-level Pokemon battle and in what Steven had mentioned after the battle. It may not have been the time or place to have that conversation then, but now was a different story, as long as Steven was feeling up to it.]
You mentioned something about May going above and beyond the duties of most Trainers her age the other day.
[With that prompting, she'll leave it up to Steven to decide where to begin.]
[ though Steven's visit was initially for lunch and friendly chatter, he had a feeling that Leia would bring up what he had initially brushed off on the day of the battle. she deserves the explanation, even if it's a story that he doesn't particularly enjoy telling. ]
It's something that happened back in our world. There was an occurrence in our region that had the potential to threaten the world, and she was the person to quell it.
[ he goes on to explain the weather crisis and the events leading up to it - the ancient legend of Groudon and Kyogre's Primal Reversion, the rise of Team Aqua in the present day, their plan and acquisition of the Blue Orb, and its near-apocalyptic consequences. he shares a memory of the torrential rains and the raging sea, unnatural and unyielding. ]
As Champion, it was my duty to protect the Hoenn region and its people. Unfortunately, it was a task that I found myself unable to handle on my own. I had witnessed May's strength and capability in the past, so I asked her to assist me.
[ he looks distant now, shameful at what he had done. he hopes Leia won't see him differently for it, but wouldn't blame her if she did. ]
She was exceedingly successful, but I realize now that I was asking far too much of her. I've since apologized for my selfishness. [ he sighs. ] In a way, I'm glad that she's here. It may be the best way to make amends.
[The house atmosphere has been tense for the last several days, and Ignis is certain he knows why, though he hasn't been able to bring himself to utter the words to any of his housemates. They're all dealing with a particular anniversary in their own ways, but he's also noted that the shift in mood isn't limited to those from Eos.
As for what's made Steven so pensive, he's sure he can guess, but he would rather that Steven say for himself whenever he's ready. Still, Ignis doesn't intend to let his partner's brooding go unremarked, and so when he comes home from an early day at the Hearth mid-afternoon, he comes bearing two cups from Steambucks: coffee for himself, and tea for Steven. He heads towards the study when he arrives home, taking a guess at where Steven might be holed up, clearing his throat as he gently raps his knuckles against the open door.]
Please tell me I'm not knocking at an empty room.
[Once again, the utter inconvenience of being blind rears its ugly and potentially embarrassing head.]
[ for Steven, it was the weather that had him personally uncomfortable. it isn't that he's afraid of the rain, but storms of this length and caliber are enough to unnerve him by memory association. he's already spoken to Archie and May about it - as understanding as Ignis is, they're likely the only ones that can relate.
as for the residents of Eos that occupy the house, he knows that today is a particularly somber day. Iris had informed him of it this morning, and he has full intention of speaking about it to Ignis once he's back home. he perks up substantially from the reading he's doing when he hears a knock at the door, followed by a smile as he hears the voice that goes along with it. ]
You're in luck...
[ unfortunately, his momentary joy is interrupted by the fact that his poor partner is dripping. the wild storm hasn't done him any favours, and while he's thankful for the cup in the takeaway tray that he knows is his, that isn't going to stop him from scolding. ]
Did you not bring an umbrella this morning? [ his tongue clicks disapprovingly as he approaches, pushing a strand of wet hair away from his face when he's close enough. there aren't many people that Steven fusses over, but Ignis is a major recipient. ] I could have easily came to pick you up...
[there is no way archie will be able to keep his brain in order to message anyone - especially steven, especially about this - so he doesn't even try. part of him doesn't even want to tell the former champion at all, doesn't want to even admit what'd happened out loud and doesn't want to have to deal with the fall out at all. this is the first person he's been close to that has left-- archie still can't stop himself thinking that maybe it was something he did or said. people don't just leave realities, right? even if they did to get here. obviously, this time is different.
crobat is out flying around, looking over the city for her. just in case. at least he knows for sure that she wasn't left behind on brinndosi; he might very well have lost his mind again if that had been the case.
he gets to steven's place about five minutes before he knocks, needing to work up to it.
[It's not, in fact, Steven who answers the front door, but Ignis instead. Despite not being a Pokemon trainer himself, there's a shiny Beldum hovering just behind his right shoulder, curious to see who might have come to call, and the faint scuffle of claws somewhere behind him as a blue-scaled wyvern creeps into the entry hall to steal a glance, as well.
Though Ignis' gaze is covered by his dark glasses, the scarring that extends to just above and below the left side of his frames is enough to explain that while his attention is directed towards Archie, he seems to look just past him instead. He inclines his head slightly, offering a polite smile.]
Ah— can I help you?
[Unfortunately, without a visual, he'll need Archie to speak up before he can place him.]
[ this... is a downright delightful message. he totally understands why she wants to pet Aron, but to be so out of the blue with it? it means that she's been thinking about it, and that's very endearing. he knew he had a good feeling about this girl's character. deeper meaning or not, who is he to say no? ]
Of course you can. I'm sure Aron won't have any objections, either.
[ The first gift betrays just how much of a nerd Noctis can be and how much he loves animals. Steven will receive a set of small beds for his Pokemon to sleep in.
The second gift is a geology 'set' that Noctis created himself. Probably, Steven has all of these, but Noctis hopes to either improve upon them or replace something that may be worn down. Steven made Ignis happy, after all.
The kit includes a smaller pickaxe, a bright flashlight that can be attached to one's head, a new microscope, a divided kit for storing rocks, and a plain white coat. Scientists wear those, right?]
